summer of service

This summer at St. George we will be expanding our on-campus service opportunities! Each Sunday in summer, we will be holding a hands-on service opportunity between worship services at 9:45 AM in the Gathering Area. Summer will be full of travel and fun, but God’s work is never done! When you and your family are in San Antonio, we invite you to be a part of the Good News and to participate in our projects for Magdalena House, Larkspur Elementary, and West Avenue Compassion before and after you attend worship. Watch the eSpear for more details.

Vote for TMI’s Science Club Project for a Grant!

By | Called to Serve, Community | No Comments

St. George Member Bridget Lynch asks for help from the St. George Community.

Bridget writes, “My TMI Science received a small grant earlier from the TeamUp program. Our club’s project is that we create hands-on science curriculums for elementary students and take it to children in Title One schools. So far, we have worked with Mead elementary. With the large grant of $20,000, we want to expand all over San Antonio and bring this opportunity to kids in Locke Hill, Larkspur, et al.  The community is allowed to vote for which project they want to receive the large grant.  Voting continues through April 1st.  We need votes from the St. George community!”

To learn more about their project, click here.

Use the hashtag #TUCvoteTMI in any social media post this week or vote for TMI by visiting: http://www.teamupchallenge.com/vote/

Any help that we can get from the community would be awesome!

St. George Members are Called to Serve – Sharing Soup With Those Who Can’t Join Us on Sundays

By | Called to Serve, Community, Fellowship | No Comments

core-valuesAt the Lenten Lunches, often there is soup left over. Marilynne Herbster coordinates using these left-overs to provide meals for some of our shut-in members. Peggy and Paul Foerster are pleased to have been able to transport soups to Harvey Cox on two Sundays. Harvey is a member of our Coffee and Conversation class that meets each Sunday between services. Harvey has participated in the class for several years although he is almost totally blind. In the past few months he as been unable to come to church even if there is someone to drive him because his inability to see subjects him to motion sickness when riding in a car. Harvey greatly appreciates the contact with fellow parishioners, through the soup ministry, the eSpear, and the weekly emails from Coffee and Conversation. He is able to read these on his computer using his document camera and enhanced view screen. Although Harvey is well into his 90s, he is still alert and communicative. He is a role model for us as we grow older.  In addition, LaRue Acosta has also been part of this ministry, and noted that this act of service fit so well with Fr. Nate’s sermon on February 21st about physical and spiritual nourishment.   Please contact Marilynne if you are interested in taking part in this ministry.
