PENTECOST

“The Fiftieth Day”

Christians have come to understand the meaning of Pentecost in terms of the gift of the Spirit. The Pentecost event was the fulfillment of a promise which Jesus gave concerning the return of the Holy Spirit. In the Christian tradition, Pentecost is now the seventh Sunday after Easter. It emphasizes that the church is understood as the body of Christ which is drawn together and given life by the Holy Spirit. The Day of Pentecost is one of the seven principal feasts of the church year in the Episcopal Church. The liturgical color for the feast is red and is worn on Pentecost Sunday to symbolize the flames that descended upon the Church at the Day of Pentecost.

On Sunday, May 19, our High School graduates will receive their Bibles and we will be offering prayers for ALL graduates, both High School & college, during the 10:00 AM worship service.

Ages 5 through 5th grade will hear scripture, wonder, learn, and worship together. Children will process to chapel from the Sanctuary and will return before communion.

COFFEE AND CONVERSATION

9:00 AM in the St. Mark’s Room/Zoom

This Sunday 5/19/24, C & C Class will begin reading and “conversing about” Chapter 3, “Night Moves by Nicodemus,” in Jamie Clark-Soles’ book Reading John for Dear Life: A Spiritual Walk with the Fourth Gospel. Nicodemus, a “good” Pharisee, appears three places in the Gospel of John, but nowhere else in the Bible. We look forward to having you join us, in person or by Zoom, for a lively discussion of what we read in class. There is a classroom set of books in case you do not have one.

This conversation and time of learning continues this coming Sunday. The group will meet in the St John’s Room, second floor of the Leadership Center. The group will use Scarred by Struggle, Transformed by Hope by Sr. Joan Chittister as an optional text as background for discussion.
